By UConn Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity Residents of one Maryland county bought fewer sugary drinks after a campaign to reduce the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages that included policy changes and public health outreach efforts, according to a new study from the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at the University of Connecticut. At 104, Ray Chavez is the oldest surviving Veteran of Pearl Harbor. And today, which marks the 75th Anniversary, Ray Chavez was able to be in Hawaii in person, because he set health goals...and then achieved them. While I am grateful for his service (and all men and women in uniform) in the Armed Forces, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge his commitment to persevere and achieve his goals, in the hopes it will motivate you to achieve yours. By now you are probably aware that the term, eat clean, has nothing to do with washing your food and has everything to do with eating in a way that promotes a healthier lifestyle, and in turn, fat loss. While it may sound simple enough, it’s pretty challenging to stick with a clean eating plan, especially when you are initially starting out. Although....I suppose if it were easy then everyone would be lean and confident about their body. So what’s the secret to long-term, clean eating success? Here it is… A sugar-laden diet may raise your risk of dying of heart disease even if you aren’t overweight. So says a major study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. By: Arlene Semeco, MS, RD Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are always looking for ways to improve their performance and achieve their goals. Good nutrition can help your body perform better and recover faster after each workout. Optimal nutrient intake prior to exercise will not only help you maximize your performance but also minimize muscle damage (1). This is a detailed guide to pre-workout nutrition. It contains everything you need to know. We all now how important setting goals is when it comes to accomplishing a task. They are the carrots on the stick that keep us moving forward. But what if you’re not setting good goals? A GOOD GOAL? You may be asking yourself, “Isn’t any goal a good goal?” True, anything is better than nothing. But when it comes to setting goals, there is a way that will improve your chances of accomplishing them. Have you ever stopped to wonder what would happen to your body if you stopped eating refined carbs? It’s not a secret...refined and processed carbs contribute to weight gain. Therefore, reducing the amount of these in your diet would logically lead to a leaner, fitter you. But is it true, or is it hype? Here’s what really goes down when you give up refined carbs… If you have ever tried to ignore a box of doughnuts at work, you know how hard it is to keep your hands to yourself and walk on by. And once you walk on by, the battle isn’t over. Even if you are in a different room and down the hall, you can’t stop thinking about those doughnuts. So why is it so hard to resist something as small and seemingly innocent as a doughnut? It has to do with both habits—and mind set. These days you can find a "hack" for everything. There are life hacks (like packing Christmas ornaments in empty egg cartons), food hacks (like placing a handful of cherry tomatoes between two plates and using a knife to halve them all in one fell swoop), and as I'll share with you today, fat loss hacks.
Fat loss hacks are ways of doing everyday things, like eating, in a way that promotes fat loss and blocks fat storage. Sounds pretty great, right?! Here are my 8 most effective Fat Burning Hacks... Believe it or not, fitness starts in your mind! Ask any athlete or fit person what the number one secret is to his or her fitness success, and their answer will likely be about commitment. If you google (or bing) “motivational quotes”, you will notice that most of them reference working hard, dedication, perseverance, persistency, and doing. It should be no surprise then, that one of the cornerstones to succeeding in anything, especially your healthy lifestyle, is commitment. It’s 3 in the afternoon and you can barely keep your eyes open. Your mind feels foggy, and all you want to do is curl up under your desk for 20 minutes and take a nap. But cutting-edge, productive people don’t take naps, do they? Actually, they do. It turns out that a nap is exactly what you need in the afternoons when drowsiness takes over your body and mind. I’ve got to warn you. There are many false rumors going around about resistance training. The truth is that strength training is one of the absolute best things you can do for your health and appearance. If you’ve fallen for these 5 myths and avoided resistance training as a result, you’re missing out on tremendous potential results. Heart disease is still the leading cause of death in the United States, with cancer close behind, according to new 2014 mortality numbers out from the CDC. However, an even bigger concern in the recent poll is that after more than a decade of steady improvements, the decline in mortality rates from heart disease and stroke has dramatically slowed nationally, and nearly leveled out since 2011. One of the questions I am most frequently asked as a fitness professional, especially now that it is swimsuit season is, “How can I get great abs?” You may have pondered this exact same question at some time or another within the last few months. However, I have to be honest and tell you that doing hundreds of crunches every day trying to get abs before your vacation next week won't work. More simply, crunches alone won’t give you a six pack. Have you ever seen a really impressive "before" and "after" photo? Of course you have. Now an even bigger question for you. Are you living life in your "before" photo or your "after"? Are you living in the body you have dreamed of, or have you just accepted the body you are in? If you aren't living in your "after" photo body, its time to remedy that. Here's how. Feeling stressed? You’re not alone. Stress is an inevitable part of our modern existence. Whether you’re the CEO of a large company, a Kindergarten teacher or a construction worker, you have stress to deal with. We all have bills to pay, relationships to maintain and challenges to get through, but you don’t have to let it get the best of you. How can you turn your stress-filled life on its head? Have you ever seen someone with an amazing physique and wondered why they were in such great shape while you're left struggling with your weight? It doesn't seem fair that they have achieved what you want to achieve so badly as well. What are they doing that you aren't? What do they know that you don't? If you boil it down to the most basic level, the answer is quite simple. Fad Diet? Pills? Genetics?? NOPE! Sure, a select few may have good genes, but if we really break it down, the real missing link between you and your ideal body is...MOTIVATION. |
