PictureRay Chavez is the oldest surviving Veteran of Pearl Harbor, and still working out.

At 104, Ray Chavez is the oldest surviving Veteran of Pearl Harbor. And today, which marks the 75th Anniversary, Ray Chavez was able to be in Hawaii in person, because he set health goals...and then achieved them.  While I am grateful for his service (and all men and women in uniform) in the Armed Forces, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge his commitment to persevere and achieve his goals, in the hopes it will motivate you to achieve yours.

Three years ago, at the young age of 101 Ray Chavez hired a personal trainer to help him achieve his fitness goals, and provided perfect advice that we should all heed. Advice that he didn't need to speak, because he showed us instead.

  1. Get emotionally connected to your goal and your why. I can only imagine the deep connection and feelings Mr. Chavez must feel to Pearl Harbor, but it was a strong enough motivator to get him working out, and accomplish his goals of being there this year (with plans of making to the 80th Anniversary in 5 years!) Without that strong emotional connection, it makes it difficult to push through the hard times.
  2. Set a realistic amount of time to complete your goal.  Mr. Chavez didn't go to a trainer a month ago to accomplish this, he has been going for 3 years.  And you should allow yourself enough to get to your goals as well.
  3. Go for it!  Mr. Chavez could easily produce ay number of excuses why he accomplish be able to complete this goal.  But instead, he went for it, and focused on achieve his goal, instead of focusing on the fear of failure, or not starting at all.
  4. Get help. Mr. Chavez realized he needed the help of a personal trainer to achieve his goals, and you should do the same.  If you don't know how to get to where you want to go, ask for help or directions!  Find a coach or a trainer, or anyone who can help you!

At 104, Ray Chavez is still showing us that anything is possible when you put your mind to it, and are willing to work hard.  Follow the same 4 steps that Mr. Chavez did, and unlock your potential.

Dedicated to Making Healthy Your Habit,
Mychael
